Summary

A little girl and her friend Bear learn the true meaning of selfless kindness in this sweet, stunningly illustrated debut picture book。

Bear is sad。 All the other animals think he’s mean because he’s so big。 But his human friend, Coco, offers to help him。 Coco shares her grandmother’s advice: “When life gets dark as winter’s night, share some kindness, bring some light。”

They decide to bake cookies to “share some kindness” and make lanterns to “bring some light。” But when the cookies and lanterns don’t work, they must look for another way to win over the other animals。 And while they’re at it, Coco and Bear just might discover that kindness is a gift that only comes from the heart。

Sweet illustrations and a lovely sentiment stated in the title made me want to give this book more stars。 The story, however, is too didactic and not original or engaging。

Beautifully illustrated。 Wonderful concept about kindness。 Sweet book for children and adults。 I love that the main character is a little black girl。 The author is white, but the color of the child does not matter for the story。 It's just a nice way to make a sweet story more diverse。 Beautifully illustrated。 Wonderful concept about kindness。 Sweet book for children and adults。 I love that the main character is a little black girl。 The author is white, but the color of the child does not matter for the story。 It's just a nice way to make a sweet story more diverse。 。。。more

This is my second reading of this title, though I’m positive my daughter has read it many times that。 Odd that I didn’t post a review the first time around。This is a delightful story of Bear, a bear, and a Coco, a girl who thinks he is wonderful。 Bear wishes the other animals of the woods knew more about him than just his size and is a bit despondent。 Coco comes up with a plan to help him make friends。 It’s a bright and delicious plan, but it hits some stumbling blocks, mainly fear and prejudice This is my second reading of this title, though I’m positive my daughter has read it many times that。 Odd that I didn’t post a review the first time around。This is a delightful story of Bear, a bear, and a Coco, a girl who thinks he is wonderful。 Bear wishes the other animals of the woods knew more about him than just his size and is a bit despondent。 Coco comes up with a plan to help him make friends。 It’s a bright and delicious plan, but it hits some stumbling blocks, mainly fear and prejudice。 Now what?Ah, a circumstance to change things, to allow Bear to show his goodness—not for approval, but because it is just who he is。The writing and illustrations work beautifully together to spread some kindness and light the whole world could learn by。 。。。more

This children’s picture book will be easy to read aloud to the preschool and kindergarten-aged children in your life。Stott’s beautifully illustrated book is about two best friends—a little girl and a bear。 Both share an important quality, which is kindness。

A very sweet story about discovering the meaning of kindness。 Lovely illustrations。

Dallin Christensen

This is a heart-warming tale that is good for Christmas time but also a great read all year long。 Dallin loves when they rescue the baby deer together。

Barbara

Coco and her friend Bear try to do something nice to show kindness to the woodland animals, but the plan backfires。 When Baby Deer gets stuck, they come to the rescue and learn where true kindness comes from。 Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light by April Stott is a simple and sweet story for children ages 3 – 8。

Angie Quantrell

Adorable and forest themed, which I love。

Cristina

This was cute but the animals should have given bear a chance from the beginning and not simply accept him after “proving himself” to be kind。

A very sweet and charming book about a little girl trying to help her best friend Bear make new friends by showing kindness。 I liked that what they initially planned didn't work out how they thought and so they had to change their plans a little。 I thought the story was well-done and the illustrations are adorable。 A very sweet and charming book about a little girl trying to help her best friend Bear make new friends by showing kindness。 I liked that what they initially planned didn't work out how they thought and so they had to change their plans a little。 I thought the story was well-done and the illustrations are adorable。 。。。more

I read this because this author/illustrator did the artwork for some of my favorite games from Grandpa Beck's Games。 I loved this story so much! The best quote is "Kindness is doing something nice without expecting to get anything in return。" Such a needed reminder for our culture today。 I read this because this author/illustrator did the artwork for some of my favorite games from Grandpa Beck's Games。 I loved this story so much! The carefully crafted narrative follows a solid structure。 It's a sweet little story and a debut to be proud of。 But it's the illustrations that elevate this book to 5 stars。 I could gaze at this art every day—and I probably have。 The colors and drawings beg the reader to linger in the pages, just like the characters in the story。 Reading it I am enveloped by the hush and majesty of a snow-filled wood。 Breathtaking。 A delight from cover to cover (and the endpaper, too!) Loved this sweet story about a girl and a bear who are friends。 Bear is sad that other animals think of it as mean but over the course of the book, despite significant opposition at points, Bear and Coco convince them otherwise。 Enjoyed the illustrations very much。 Great read!

Annie

Outstanding message, text and illustration in this debut。

I found this to be a bit disappointing。 The reason I rounded up to 3 stars was simply for the art。 The little girl is adorable and I would’ve loved rep like her (that looks like me!) in a picture book and I’m glad it’s here now。 For me, the story was a subpar version of a kindness tale that’s been done endlessly in some stellar ways (especially right now! Now is an amazing time for picture books!)。 I’m all here for a kindness take and don’t think we can have too many, but as someone who reads a I found this to be a bit disappointing。 The reason I rounded up to 3 stars was simply for the art。 The little girl is adorable and I would’ve loved rep like her (that looks like me!) in a picture book and I’m glad it’s here now。 For me, the story was a subpar version of a kindness tale that’s been done endlessly in some stellar ways (especially right now! This is a great kids book。 The illustrations are lovely and the message is at a great level— not schlocky and obvious, but not Philosophy 101 either。 The whole family could appreciate it。 Plus: talking animals, cookies, snow。。。 classic story elements!

Charlotte Cassidy

a wonderful winter story with a heartwarming message and beautiful illustrations

Tania Roberts

A sweet story of hope, making friends, and sharing true kindness - acts of love, expecting nothing in return。 A wonderful message for the start of another tough year。

When I read this title, I immediately thought: Democracy dies in darkness。Thinking about this week's events, I was surprised that a book title took me there when I pulled the book off the shelf。 But, is it not the small things that usually leave the biggest impressions? This is such a sweet book。 The illustrations are gorgeous and I love the storytelling as well。 This is a beautiful book with a big heart! This will be a book I add to my gift giving roster。

I read this book to students and the message was felt。 The students empathized with the bear and wanted him to be able to make friends。 The illustrations and words compelled the readers attention。 The message was not lost on this audience。

Edward Sullivan

A charming, big-hearted story about kindness and friendship。

I have a small collection of children's picture books (I end up buying one every couple of years) for whenever I spot one with artwork that I love。 I grabbed one of these since I was able to get it for $7。99 rather than the $17。99 list price, and it turned out to be an adorable holiday read。 My only complaint is that it gets borderline preachy and isn't super original compared to some of the others in my collection, but it's nonetheless a perfect book to gift for the holidays!
